Here is my answer
Tagging can be a bit hit and miss for all of us but this does seem like a specific and consistent issue for you. I can’t replicate it myself so I guess it must be a fault with your account or something new they are testing…which leads me to my main point. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are testing removing the ability to tag the author of a post in the comments because they will always be notified of your comment anyway, whether you tag them or not (same goes for a reply to a comment, the original commenter will be notified). So, if I have understood you correctly, it might be something they are rolling out.
